Mobile Data Explosion - A Real IT Nightmare
IT managers better get ready for fright night. No we’re not talking about Halloween, but the massive volume of corporate mobile data that isn’t being backed up – it’s bound to turn into a real nightmare for anyone in IT who deals with backup and DR.
Fred Moore, an analyst with Horison Information Strategies, states that mobile devices currently store 28% of all corporate data. Most enterprises have spent years backing up and protecting servers and desktops. Some may be on top of laptop data protection too. But right now, mobile goes beyond laptops and includes tablets and smartphones. Staff stores a lot of their precious data on these devices, which accounts for the 28% corporate data on mobile platforms – most of which is not being protected from disaster.
Uncontrollable Mobile Data Growth
Let’s fast forward to the really grisly part. According to the Cisco Visual Networking Index Report, mobile data is growing at 69% per year, reaching 25 exabytes per month in 2014. To put it another way, last year’s mobile data traffic was 30 times greater than the size of the entire global Internet in 2000.
Cisco also reports that half a billion new mobile devices and connections were added globally in 2014. That took the total to 7.4 billion mobile devices – more than the world’s population at that time. To top it off, within the next five years, Cisco predicts that monthly global mobile traffic will surpass 24.3 exabytes, and the volume of connected devices and components will reach 32 billion. That’s a lot of data that will need to be backed up.
Unleashing Mobile Video Content
In case you aren’t scared yet, the study reveals that mobile video traffic exceeded 55% of total mobile traffic in 2014. In other words, the size of mobile files is getting bigger and bigger over time as more video content is created. Webcasts, instructional videos, sales briefings, marketing campaigns and much more will be stored on mobile devices anywhere within and outside the enterprise. And IT gets blamed if any of it gets lost, deleted, infected or is otherwise left unprotected – creating a recipe for a real life nightmare.
Do you want your mobile users to end up like the supporting cast in movies like I Know What You Didn’t Back Up Last Summer? Probably not. That’s why it’s time to start looking into solutions that can protect all of the data on all of your devices.
